There is a political maxim, variously attributed to Winston Churchill, Karl Marx, and current mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel: “Never let a serious crisis go to waste.” More and more contemporary discourse is framed in terms of threats and dangers and our responsibility to meet them. In this symposium a group of international scholars from Education, Public Health, Linguistics, and Philosophy discuss how threats, dangers, and this atmosphere of crisis are formed, and how we might responsibly handle the challenges of contemporary society.
